My History

Welcome to SalesRep101. My name is Brent and I have been in sales my entire career. I wanted to create a place where people in sales could learn no matter what level of experience they have. People who have had a successful career in sales all have one thing in common. They are constantly learning and willing to try new things. And this site is not only a great place for someone just starting out in sales, but it can be a great resource for even seasoned veterans. My path in sales came very unexpected when I was right out of college. I studied business and marketing and my goal was get into Sports Marketing. However, I had absolutely no idea how to do that. So I decided to reach out to some of my local sports teams to see if anyone would meet with me to give me some guidance. I got lucky and the marketing department with the Kansas City Royals set up a meeting with me. During our meeting they told me that if that was what I wanted to do as a career then I really needed to start in sales and get some experience. I was slightly confused because I really didn’t know exactly what sales would do for me. But I was thankful for the advice and I started researching my options. Now, back in 1990’s things were much different. I could not just plug in the word sales into google. I had to hit the pavement and ask questions. Back then Cellular Phones were really starting to be accessible to everyone and I thought that might be a great place to start. Plus, I got a free Cell Phone which was awesome! I quickly found out that sales was a great fit for me. I loved the flexibility, the opportunity to make money, and more importantly it was a perfect fit for my personality. You can learn more about whether sales is a good fit for you <here.> After about a year I decided to open my own Cell Phone company. I quickly expanded into Pagers, Satellite TV, and Home Security. I really enjoyed owning my own company but it was stressful. And I eventually learned that even though you own your own company, you are completely dependent on the products and services you offer. And when those companies decide to make changes that affect your business, they don’t really care how if affects the people that sell their products that make those companies a fortune. So after learning that the hard way after 5 years I needed to make a change quickly so I took a position selling yellow pages. Now keep in mind, back then the Yellow Page industry was very lucrative and you could make a great income. But, it was hard to sell. Back then if you could sell Yellow Pages you could sell anything. And that is when I realized that a career in sales was my path. However, one thing about sales is that you need to be open to new opportunities because things can change. Learn more about that topic <here>. After about 4 years in the Yellow Page industry things started to change and I could see that eventually Yellow Pages would be gone. So I made the move to Television advertising sales. I loved it. So I stayed in TV/Radio advertising sales for close to 10 years. But like I just said a moment ago, things can change fast. Advertising Sales started to become much more competitive and the digital advertising market really started to affect our income potential. So, I decided to make another change and got into In-Home Sales. And In-Home Sales was the perfect fit for me. Learn more about In-Home Sales <here>. And that is what I have been in for the last 5 years. I would like to think I have another 15 years left in me. But what I really want to do is share all of my experience. Over the years I have gained so much knowledge from working in different sales industries, not to mention all of the knowledge I’ve learned from others in my different fields. I hope that whether you are in the beginning stages of your career, the end of a long career or somewhere in between you can find something here that can help you succeed.

Good luck to all of you!
